About the Colebrook Land Conservancy
Our Mission
Preserve and conserve the special and unique characteristics of Colebrook—rural, historic and scenic—using accepted land conservation techniques and education in cooperation with the Town, the community and other groups.
Organized in 1986, The Colebrook Land Conservancy, Inc. is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the preservation of Colebrook’s rural character through the conservation of its natural resources. The Conservancy protects 1,455 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and scenic roadsides, as well as the historic Hale Farm.
An important part of the Conservancy’s mission is fostering an appreciation of the environment. To that end, we sponsor a variety of educational and recreational activities throughout the year. We also invite you to visit our four hiking trails that explore the woodlands, wetlands, and history of Colebrook.
Ongoing Conservancy Activities
- With the help of volunteers, monitoring protected properties
- Maintaining the Deer Hill, Hale, Rockwell and Sandy Brook trails for the public’s use
- Managing the hayfields and pasture land at the Hale Farm property and the wildlife habitat meadows at its Colebrook Road Preserve
- Publishing a newsletter with articles about nature and local conservation issues
- Hosting nature talks and guided walks
- Maintaining an informative website and Facebook page
- Regularly donating books and videos on nature to the Colebrook Consolidated School in honor of Earth Day
- Speaking out on issues important to conservation
- Displaying a variety of news for the conservation-minded on a bulletin board at the Colebrook Senior and Community Center
- Talking with property owners in all areas of town about permanently protecting their land for future generations
